Sheldon Knapp, of the Phoenix City Grille, has been in the restaurant business most of his adult life. Born in central Pennsylvania, he moved to Arizona in 1971, when he got out of the Army. Stationed in Europe, his plan at the time was to become an interpreter and the University of Heidelberg had a great school, but he opted to travel Europe in a Volkswagen van with a group of friends.

Yet, he always wanted to get back to Europe, and moved to Phoenix to study at the Thunderbird School of International Management. He got a job in the restaurant business, “and”, as Sheldon says, “one thing led to another”. He feels fortunate to have found a business he’s really loved since he was very young.

The Phoenix City Grille opened in 1997, while Sheldon was Manager and Operating Partner at McKenna’s (located on the ground floor of the “Del Webb’s Towne House”, one of a small chain of hotels built, owned & operated by Phoenix legend Del Webb). The Phoenix City Grille “was the type of place that I’d been looking for, for years”. Sheldon also feels fortunate to have found a staff, some of whom have been with the Phoenix City Grille for 21 years, giving Phoenix City Grille a consistency that’s rare in the high-turnover restaurant business.

That good fortune includes the Chef and Executive Partner, who had been with him for 10 years previously, and now a partner.

Menu items include Cedar Plank Salmon; PCG Pasta; Griddle Corn Cakes; which have been on the menu since opening in 1997, but the menu has expanded and evolved over the years based upon the talents of kitchen staff, many of whom never left. Dorado Fish and Mahi Mahi were on the menu the week of November 10th.

Two private dining rooms are available for private dining functions;, and are great for staff luncheons, holiday parties, bridal showers, anniversary dinners. Private menus are available upon request with prior notice.

The Phoenix City Grille is centrally located at 5816 N 16th St, at the southwest corner of 16th Street & Bethany Home, in Uptown. The website is http://phoenixcitygrille.com, and they can be found on Facebook and Instagram; they have their own YouTube Channel, and they post Daily Specials.
