Hosted by Gene Kernan, The Phoenix Network was broadcasting November 17th from George’s Famous Gyros & Pasta at 20206 North 27th Avenue in Phoenix and I had the honor of introducing the one the only George Salvirides, owner of George’s Famous Gyros & Pasta.
George was born outside of Chicago, in Rosemont and grew up in Des Plaines until he was about 10 years old when the family moved to Greece, living in a suburb of Athens – about as far as Tempe to Phoenix – for about a year-and-a-half.
They came to Phoenix when his mother, a registered nurse, skilled in dialysis, got a job offer to come here from Greece. Making it easier was an uncle already here.
The restaurant business is somewhat of a family tradition. George’s father Ted, whom the Host had the pleasure of meeting, has a long history in the restaurant business. Ted, who still has a noticeable Greek accent, came from Greece in 1976, George says, opening his first shop in Chicago in 1986.
George, himself, went to school for aviation and has his commercial pilot’s license, but chose to open up a restaurant instead.
George’s Famous Gyros & Pasta specializes in Chicago Gyros – something that one normally thinks of as Greek – located just across from Deer Valley Towne Center, across the 101.
“Wow that’s a hell of a sandwich!” – Host
He’s been in Arizona longer than anywhere else and “pretty much an Arizona guy,” saying “the 110s don’t bother me. At the 115s is when I start to get a little but other than that…”.
In addition to gyros, & pasta, George’s Famous has hamburgers, hot dogs, “pita pizzas” and much more.
